Rural Sports

Rural sports (Herri Kirolak) are rooted in the traditional agrarian lifestyle of the Basque people. The New England Basque Club encourages all members to become members of its rural sports team. The most spectacular of these is Aizkora Proba (wood chopping) with three aizkolaris, Riki Lasa, Juan Mari Aramendi and Patxi Gandiaga, who have been competing for the Txapela (Basque beret) trophy against one another for the last few years. The team also demonstrates Harri Jasotzea (stone lifting), Txinga Eramatea (weight carrying) and Sokatira (tug-of-war) with spectators encouraged to participate in these fun activities.
